Larrikins on the Bridge
Victoria Bridge from Queen Street, Brisbane, c 1880
A CORRESPONDENT writes to complain of what might have proved a fatal injury done to him or his friends on Saturday evening last by some evil disposed larrikins on the Victoria Bridge. It seems that our correspondent, with some friends, took a punt and pulled over to near the bridge for a few hours' fishing - a thing they had as much right to do without annoyance as to walk along the highway. While they were so engaged, however, some on the bridge dropped a very large stone down which fell within a few inches of the boat. Had it fallen upon any of the occupants it would have stunned, if it had not killed them on the spot, and if it had fallen into the boat, as seemed to be the intention, it would inevitably have knocked a hole through the bottom, and the lives of all might have been sacrificed.
Then and now...
